Legal Entity & Business Controller – Rome, Italy

Salary range: EUR 60,000-75,000 depending on experience plus 15% discretionary bonus

About the Role

The Controller will provide financial business steering and oversight for the Italy Catalysts business including managing metal and pool accounts for the Rome site. This role is a business liaison to site leadership and management ensuring data transparency and active support to drive decisions. We are looking for an experienced, analytical canddiate who is comfortable working in a stand alone position, is curious about how our business works and can be both strategic and hands on.  


Key Responsibilities

Financial Controlling, Reporting & Planning

  • Lead monthly analysis, reporting, forecasting, and month-end close processes.

  • Drive continuous improvement and simplification of reporting and controlling activities.

  • Develop and monitor annual budgets, identifying opportunities to optimize costs and efficiency.

  • Evaluate business initiatives, projects, and ad-hoc analyses to support strategic decisions.

  • Partner with leadership to guide and challenge business performance.

  • Lead and coordinate internal and external audits, ensuring compliance with BASF’s accounting policies and maintaining robust internal controls.

Tax Management

  • Provide accurate and timely information to tax advisors for annual corporate tax computations.

  • Ensure full compliance with Italian VAT legislation, regulations, and reporting requirements.

  • Manage tax-related inquiries and filings within the area of responsibility.

Treasury

  • Oversee bank facilities, cash management, and foreign currency exposures in alignment with BASF Treasury guidelines.

  • Ensure effective banking controls and administration are in place to support business needs.

Metal Control

  • Manage and enhance processes related to precious metal control, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance.

  • Identify process risks and implement mitigation and optimization measures, including automation opportunities.

  • Reconcile precious metal transactions, purchases, and recoveries, ensuring integrity across all systems and stakeholders.

  • Prepare and interpret financial analyses and KPI reports to support business decisions.

Compliance

  • Maintain a robust system of internal controls in line with BASF’s Financial Reporting Compliance (FRC) standards and local regulations.

  • Ensure timely and accurate implementation of BASF corporate guidelines.

Digitalization

  • Leverage digital tools and solutions to enhance reporting, streamline processes, and improve overall efficiency and effectiveness.


Qualifications & Experience

  • Qualified Accountant and member of the National Board of Professional Chartered Accountants (CNDCEC).

  • 3–5 years of progressive experience in controlling, financial planning, or accounting — ideally across both operational and corporate settings.

  • 3+ years of excellent VAT experience including working with necessary Italian authorities.

  • Strong knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

  • Proven analytical and strategic thinking abilities with the capacity to interpret complex data and deliver actionable insights.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a collaborative approach to problem-solving.

  • Fluent in Italian and English (written and spoken).
