Accurate data and intelligent modelling are the keys to understanding markets and creating business success. Here at BASF Environmental Catalyst & Metal Solutions (ECMS), the Platinum Group Metals (“PGM”) Market Analysis team is a support function whose goal is to create accurate pictures of the current and future state of the PGM market in order to provide our company with a competitive edge.

The Market & Business Analyst (“M/BA”) will inherit the responsibility for maintaining and improving a series of models that track important market data and convert this into predictions for how global and regional metal supply/demand/price dynamics will play out, as well as monitoring news flow to ensure that strategic changes are timely and well-informed. The appointee will be required to work alongside our Trading, Commercial and Strategy teams, other internal and external analysts, and on their own to develop sections of new and existing datasets and data handling systems to support robust market analysis, commentary and insight. Communication of these insights, both verbally and in writing, is another key skill.

The successful M/BA applicant will demonstrate a keen interest in, and knowledge of, trends in relevant commodities markets. Strong computing and numerical skills are a must, as is the ability to readily summarise and communicate trends in a clear, concise manner.

 

Core responsibilities:

  • Maintain existing suite of market data models, while continuously improving these – whether by increasing data granularity, reducing/improving assumptions, migrating to new systems, or creating clearer dashboards of outputs
  • Support in the creation of both internal and external reports that communicate views on the PGM market
  • Monitor news flow for stories that might impact ECMS’ precious metal business and communicate these both upwards and across the organization
  • Develop a network of contacts (both internal and external) to gain broader market insight
  • Present ECMS’ views to other market participants
  • Support analysis of new business opportunities, such as capital investments into new assets or technologies

 

What we expect:

  • Strong numeracy essential, with an ability to interpret, analyse and present data in an compelling way
  • Deep understanding of the global PGM commodities markets
  • Experience of manipulating datasets
  • Clear and concise communication skills
  • Background in commodity analysis, as well as any of the following would be beneficial: chemistry, metallurgy, finance, economics
  • Resourceful, diligent and self-motivated: able to work on complex briefs without a large amount of external oversight
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Ability to work cross functionally
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office applications such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint is essential, and experience in the following is considered to be highly advantageous: PowerBI, Visio, Dataverse, VBA, SQL
