As the Product Engineer, Aerospace – Huntsville, AL you will LEAD by…

 

The Product Engineer exercises technical ownership of the aerospace converter product portfolio and provides sustaining engineering support throughout the product lifecycle.  BASF designs, manufactures, and services ozone converters, ozone/VOC converters, and VOZC for commercial, regional, and business jets.  Converters improve cabin air quality.  Ozone is removed from ambient air before it enters the aircraft to satisfy federal regulations and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are mitigated to improve comfort [basf-catalystsmetals.com/en/catalysts/aerospace].

 

The Product Engineer serves as the primary technical liaison between Design & Development, Production, Quality, and Supply Chain, managing engineering changes, technical issue resolution, product improvement initiatives, and manufacturing support activities.

 

The Product Engineer role resides in Huntsville, AL at the BASF Aerospace Business manufacturing site and reports to the BASF Aerospace Engineering Manager, who resides in Iselin, NJ.

 

As the Product Engineer, your primary responsibilities will include the following.

  • Own the engineering design change process
  • Maintain product configuration integrity and ensure compliance with approved engineering baselines through revision control and configuration management processes
  • Own the translation of product designs and design changes into detailed 3-D SolidWorks models and 2D mechanical drawings of components, assemblies, tooling, and fixtures
  • Lead the technical evaluation of nonconforming materials and support Material Review Board (MRB) disposition activities
  • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders on root cause investigations and corrective action activities associated with quality escapes, customer feedback, and manufacturing process issues
  • Provide day-to-day engineering support to manufacturing operations, resolving technical issues affecting manufacturability, safety, quality, and cost
  • Design and modify production fixtures, tooling, and support equipment to improve production efficiency and product quality
  • Lead the technical aspects of continuous improvement workstreams originating with Production, Quality, and Supply Chain
  • Support First Article Inspection (AS9102) activities and product qualification
  • Drive new supplier development through technical evaluation, qualification, and engineering collaboration to ensure component quality, manufacturability, and supply continuity
  • Manage obsolescence and alternate component/material qualification
  • Lead and coordinate AS9145 APQP deliverables having high technical content, including Process Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (PFMEA), Control Plan, and Process Flow Diagram
  • Lead product prototype development and testing
  • Serve as the on-site technical authority for assigned product lines during customer reviews, technical inquiries, and quality investigations 

 

Your elements for success…

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related engineering discipline strongly preferred an associate’s degree and applicable Aerospace component work experience will be considered
  • 5+ years preferred, 3 years minimum, professional experience during which the following have been demonstrated
    • Engineering Change Order (ECO) experience
    • Configuration management system experience
    • Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) process experience
    • AS9100D, AS9145, AS9102 industry standards experience
  • Aerospace experience preferred
  • Proficiency in 3-D SolidWorks modeling and 2D mechanical drawing strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T
  • Broad working knowledge of mechanical design and assembly, especially TIG welding processes for aerospace materials – stainless steel, Inconel 625, titanium required
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, administrative skills, combined with personal motivation and personal adaptability.
  • Demonstrated experience in independent work within a collaborative team
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills
  • Confident and articulate in both manufacturing and business settings, including customer technical exchanges
  • Expect travel up to 10% for business alignment meetings and to support design and development activities, including third-party testing
